The PROXIMA project –PRecision Oncology through eXploitation of Imaging-guided Medical AI-, led by Lara Cavinato, has been funded by Fondazione Cariplo (“Young Researchers” Call for Applications – 2025).
Overview of the PROXIMA project: Cancer is highly heterogeneous, making diagnosis and treatment often difficult, as current methods separately analyze micro-scale pathology and macro-scale imaging. AI approaches have attempted multi-scale integration, from interpretable but limited feature-based models to powerful yet opaque deep learning methods. The project proposes a physics-informed, multi-scale AI model that integrates biological and imaging principles to improve interpretability and clinical impact.
