Modeling and simulation of faults in seismology

The project consists in studying a model of faults used in seismology and numerically solving it, using an already established code. The Earth's crust is modeled as an isotropic (linearly) elastic material that occupies a half plane, while the fault is modeled as a straight curve ( a segment) in its interior that is oriented almost horizontally. On the fault, the two side of the material are allowed to slip one with respect to the other in a prescribed way. The purpose of the project is twofold: 1) employ an already developed numerical method (a Discontinuous Galerkin scheme) by the group of Professors Paola Antonietti and Luca Fomaggia to simulate the elastic deformation induced by the imposed slip on the known fault; 2) utilize the results in part 1) to determine an unknown slip and an unknown fault from measurements of the deformation at the surface of the Earth by using a mathematical algorithm, such as a least square minimization of a misfit error between the measure and computed data Part 2) may involve a theoretical component, that is, the computation of the so-called "shape derivative", which gives the response of the system to small perturbation in the slip and in the fault location, for the case of a homogeneous material and constant slip. This project is in collaboration with Professors Andrea Aspri (Radon Institute, Linz, Austria), Elena Beretta (Politecnico and NUY-Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates), and Anna Mazzucato (Penn State University, University Park, USA).
