Abstract:
This seminar aims to provide a broad and comprehensive understanding of the optimal transport problem, which deals with finding the most efficient way to move mass from one distribution to another. In recent times, the exploration of this problem has resulted in the creation of several novel mathematical instruments. These are slowly being integrated into the toolkit of practitioners in applied sciences. The Wasserstein distance stands out among these instruments due to its unique capability to quantify the disparity between two probability distributions by considering not just their magnitudes but also their respective positions. We will present how this properties may be particularly useful in solving inverse problems. We will also provide an overview of the state-of-the-art of numerical methods for solving the optimal transport problem. We will also go into the challenges and unresolved questions in this area of research. Contatto: alessio.fumagalli@polimi.it
