MOX Lab will take part in the Festival Internazionale dell’Ingegneria 2026, organized by Politecnico di Milano from September 18 to 20, 2026, with the interactive activity “Guida il gruppo, accendi il movimento!”
How does a group move? And how can mathematics and technology help us understand and reproduce collective behaviours observed in nature and society? During this interactive experience, participants will have the opportunity to guide a virtual group — a flock of swallows or a crowd of people — through different spaces and situations, exploring how simple interactions between individuals can give rise to coordinated collective behaviour.
Coordinated by Francesca Bonizzoni and Ivan Fumagalli, the activity offers an engaging and accessible way to discover the role of mathematical modelling and simulation in the study of complex phenomena. By actively taking part in the experiment, participants will see how individual choices can influence the dynamics of an entire group.
Designed for adults, teenagers, and children, “Guida il gruppo, accendi il movimento!” turns visitors from observers into active participants, offering a hands-on introduction to the mathematics behind collective motion.
