During the opening ceremony of the 17th World Congress on Computational Mechanics (WCCM) and the 10th ECCOMAS Congress, held in Munich on 20 July 2026, two members of the MOX Laboratory, Department of Mathematics, Politecnico di Milano, were honored with major international distinctions in recognition of their outstanding scientific achievements.
Alfio Quarteroni was awarded the IACM Gauss–Newton Medal, the highest award given by the Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM). It honors individuals who have made outstanding, sustained contributions in the field of computational mechanics over periods representing substantial portions of their professional careers. The Award is called Gauss-Newton in recognition of the synergy between mathematics, numerical analysis, and mathematical modeling of physical events that underpin much of the broad field of computational mechanics.
Mattia Corti received the 2026 ECCOMAS PhD Award for his doctoral dissertation “Mathematical Models and Numerical Methods for Neurodegenerative Diseases”. The ECCOMAS PhD Awards honor the best doctoral theses in computational methods for applied sciences and engineering, recognizing originality, scientific excellence, and significant research contributions by early-career scholars.
These prestigious awards attest to the excellence of the research conducted at the MOX Laboratory and its ongoing contributions to the advancement of computational mathematics at the international level.
